The Fed predicted 2.7% inflation for 2026. March came in at 3.3%. That's the Fed's own forecast, blown past in the first quarter.

Meanwhile oil crashed 30% in two weeks on ceasefire headlines, Bitcoin is up 5% this morning, and gold is quietly climbing back toward $4,800. A lot happened while everyone was watching the war.

Good morning. Here's what it all means.

Gold is rebounding toward $4,800 as Iran signaled willingness to resume talks and oil pulled back. A softer dollar helps. The fundamentals haven't changed. They've just been buried under war headlines.

Crypto is ripping. Bitcoin up 5%, Ethereum up 8% this morning. Both are moving independently of oil. That's a newer development worth watching.

Oil is down 13% on the week, touching $97. Ceasefire hopes, fresh Iran-US contact, and Trump reportedly considering pulling US forces from Iran within weeks all hit at once. The Strait is still shut though. This move may be getting ahead of itself.

The Big Story

Inflation Hit 3.3%. The Fed Predicted 2.7%. Gold Noticed.

By The Alternative Insider Research Team

Federal Reserve building

March CPI came in at 3.3% year over year. The monthly print was up 0.9%, the steepest single-month rise since mid-2022. Markets now price in just a 30% chance of a rate cut before December.

For context: the Fed raised its own inflation forecast to 2.7% at the March meeting. That was already an upward revision and a signal they were worried. March came in 60 basis points above that. In the first quarter. With the war barely a month old when the data was collected.

The April data hasn't even landed yet. Oil was above $110 for most of April. Shipping costs are up sharply. Airlines are warning about fuel surcharges. The 3.3% print is a lagging number. What's coming next is likely worse.

What this means for the Fed

The Fed is holding at 3.50-3.75%. With inflation at 3.3% and rising, real rates are essentially zero. That's not restrictive policy. It's not even neutral policy. It's a central bank that is stuck, unable to cut without looking irresponsible and unable to hike without crushing a war-stressed economy.

Seven of 19 FOMC members now see rates unchanged for all of 2026. Kevin Warsh takes over as Fed chair in May. His first months will be spent navigating the worst inflation-growth tradeoff since the 1970s stagflation era. He has called for a leaner Fed balance sheet and productivity-driven rate cuts. Neither is available to him right now.

What this means for gold

Gold does one thing really well: it holds value when the Fed can't or won't fight inflation. Real rates near zero. Inflation climbing. A central bank with no good move on the board. That's the setup right now.

Gold is currently down about 15% from its January all-time high. But the conditions that drove it from $2,000 to $5,594 have not only persisted, they've gotten worse. U.S. debt is now projected at $1.9 trillion for FY2026. Debt-to-GDP hits 101% this year, heading to 120% by 2036. The war has added billions more to the bill.

Wall Street hasn't moved. UBS is at $6,200. Goldman at $6,000. Wells Fargo at $6,100-6,300. Not one major bank has cut its gold target during the correction. Central banks bought 850 tonnes in 2025 and are on pace to match that in 2026.

The Bottom Line

The Fed predicted 2.7%. Got 3.3%. Rates are stuck. Inflation is climbing. The textbook case for owning hard assets just got an update, and the update made it stronger.

Oil Crashed 30% in Two Weeks. The Strait Is Still Shut. Be Careful What You Celebrate.

Oil tanker

WTI hit $115 on April 7. It's at $97 today. That's a 30% collapse in under two weeks, almost entirely on headlines: ceasefire signed, talks in Islamabad, Iran reached out, Trump considering withdrawal. Oil traders unloaded the war premium.

The Strait of Hormuz is still shut. OPEC+ output fell 7.9 million barrels per day in March, the largest single-month drop on record. Shipping companies are still refusing to transit Hormuz without security guarantees that don't exist yet. Iran hasn't agreed to anything. The ceasefire itself is two weeks old and already fraying.

Look at the futures curve. WTI May is at $97. June is $92. December is $77. The market is pricing in a full resolution of the Strait within months. That is an optimistic assumption for a conflict that has failed to produce a deal after multiple rounds of talks, a naval blockade, and the highest-level US-Iran meeting since 1979.

If talks stall again, oil doesn't go back to $115. It goes past it. The optimism is priced in. The supply disruption isn't fixed. That's a gap worth paying attention to.

Roundup
What's Brewing

๐Ÿค Iran and the US are talking again. Hours after the US naval blockade took effect Monday, Trump said Iran reached out and wants to resume negotiations. Iranian President Pezeshkian confirmed readiness for continued dialogue. The two-week ceasefire expires next Monday. A 45-60 day extension is on the table if progress is made.

โ›ฝ OPEC+ output dropped 7.9 million barrels per day in March. That's the cartel's own report. The Strait closure effectively took nearly 8 million bpd offline in a single month. For reference, that's more than the entire daily output of the United States. The supply math is very tight regardless of what the headlines say.

๐Ÿ“Š PPI data drops today. Producer prices are the leading indicator for consumer inflation. After CPI came in at 3.3%, a hot PPI print today would signal that the inflation pipeline is still filling up. Watch this number. It moves gold and rate expectations simultaneously.

๐Ÿฆ Kevin Warsh takes over the Fed in May. The incoming chair has a nuanced stance: leaner balance sheet, openness to cuts if productivity improves. Neither is easily available in a war economy with 3.3% inflation. His first press conference will be one of the most watched Fed events in years. Markets will be looking for any signal on rate direction.

โš–๏ธ CLARITY Act vote targeted for late April. The Senate Banking Committee is pushing for a market structure vote before May. If it passes, SOL, ADA, and other commodity-classified tokens get a clear ETF runway. If it stalls, the regulatory window closes. Senator Moreno's deadline stands: pass it by May or it doesn't happen this cycle.

๐Ÿ  Thousands of sailors are stuck in the Strait. A maritime labor union warned this week that crew members stranded on vessels in Hormuz are running critically low on basic supplies. The humanitarian dimension of the Strait closure is escalating. This pressure may actually accelerate a deal faster than any diplomatic deadline.

Calendar
On the Radar
Today PPI data. The producer price index is the leading edge of consumer inflation. A hot number after 3.3% CPI would confirm the inflation pipeline is still pressurized and push gold higher.
Wed 4/15 EIA weekly crude inventory report. With the Strait still effectively closed, U.S. inventory builds or draws will have outsized impact on oil pricing this week.
Mon 4/20 The two-week US-Iran ceasefire expires. Either it gets extended 45-60 days or talks collapse and oil spikes. This is the next hard binary event for energy, gold, and crypto simultaneously.
May Kevin Warsh takes over as Fed chair. CLARITY Act vote before month-end or it misses the window. Two catalysts for crypto and gold in the same month.
