Gems Uncovered. Weekly intelligence briefings tracking early-stage crypto assets before they hit mainstream exchanges. Get instant access โ†’

Bitcoin crossed $80,000 this morning for the first time since January, and the reason matters more than the number. It wasn't a whale buying spree or a short squeeze. It was the CLARITY Act finally moving through the Senate, giving US crypto markets the clearest regulatory framework they've ever had, and institutional money responding accordingly.

Meanwhile Iran shot two missiles at a US Navy frigate in the Strait of Hormuz yesterday. Gold went down. Oil went up. If that sequence confuses you, you're in the right place this week.

Good morning. A lot happened. Let's get into it.

Bitcoin is back above $80,000 for the first time since January, up 5.2% on the week, and leading every asset class on this list by a wide margin. The CLARITY Act progress is the catalyst, with Circle and Coinbase stocks both rallying hard on the news that a stablecoin yield compromise has cleared the main legislative obstacle.

Gold is down 1.7% despite Iran attacking a US warship yesterday, which tells you everything about why precious metals investors need to understand the difference between a geopolitical shock and an inflation shock. More on that in the Big Story.

Oil is up 9.8% this week and the Iranian frigate attack is the reason. The Hormuz situation just escalated again, the ceasefire is effectively dead, and anyone who called $77 December futures last week is quietly revising their models.

The Big Story

Bitcoin Just Crossed $80,000. The CLARITY Act Is Why, and the Implications Are Bigger Than the Price.

By The Alternative Insider Research Team

Bitcoin rally

Bitcoin hit $81,000 this morning, a level it hadn't seen since January, and the trigger wasn't a whale, a CEO announcement, or a macro flip. It was a deal in Washington. Senate negotiators reached a compromise on stablecoin yield language in the CLARITY Act, clearing the main obstacle that has been blocking the bill for months. Circle and Coinbase stocks both rallied sharply on the news. Tom Lee went on record calling it the start of "crypto spring."

For context on why the CLARITY Act matters beyond stablecoins: it establishes the first comprehensive legal framework for digital asset market structure in the US, formally classifying which tokens are commodities and which are securities, and creating a clear path for spot ETFs covering assets beyond Bitcoin and Ethereum. Every major institution that has been sitting on the sidelines waiting for regulatory clarity has been waiting for exactly this. The SEC and CFTC joint guidance from March was the opening act. The CLARITY Act is the main event.

What actually changes if this passes

Solana, Cardano, Avalanche, Chainlink, and at least a dozen other tokens that were already classified as commodities under the March joint guidance get a clear ETF runway. The spot Bitcoin ETF launched in January 2024 pulled in $33 billion in its first year. A spot Solana ETF, launching into a market where institutional appetite has been validated and regulation is settled, has the potential to attract a very different kind of capital than early BTC ETF buyers were bringing.

The stablecoin layer matters separately. If stablecoins are allowed to pay yield under the GENIUS Act framework, you're looking at a $320 billion stablecoin market that becomes a direct competitor to money market funds. That's not a crypto story anymore. That's a banking story, and every financial institution with a money market product is aware of it.

Morgan Stanley launched its Stablecoin Reserves Portfolio last week, settling a government money market fund in stablecoins. That wasn't a press release moment. It was a bank quietly building the plumbing before the regulatory green light is formally given, because by the time it's given, the institutions who didn't build first will be playing catch-up.

The risk the bulls aren't talking about

Senator Moreno said it plainly: if the CLARITY Act doesn't pass by May, it doesn't pass this cycle. That's not a negotiating tactic, it's a calendar reality driven by midterm election positioning. The compromise reached this week is encouraging but not final. The full Senate vote hasn't happened. There's still time for it to fall apart, and if it does, the $80,000 price action built on legislative optimism reverses fast.

The Bottom Line

The price crossing $80,000 is a symptom. The cause is a decade of regulatory uncertainty finally starting to resolve. If the CLARITY Act passes, the institutions who have been waiting get their green light. If it fails, we find out how much of this rally was priced on hope. Either way, the structural shift in crypto's legal status is already further along than most investors realize.

Iran Shot at a US Warship Yesterday. Gold Went Down. Here's Why That's the Most Important Thing in Markets Right Now.

Ships in strait

Iran fired two missiles at a US Navy frigate in the Strait of Hormuz yesterday morning. Gold fell nearly 2% on the news. If you've been told that gold goes up when geopolitical risk goes up, yesterday probably felt very confusing.

Here's what's actually happening. The gold-as-safe-haven trade works when geopolitical risk is the primary concern. But right now, the primary concern in gold markets isn't safety, it's inflation, and specifically it's the fear that escalating oil prices will force central banks to keep interest rates higher for longer or even raise them. Gold has no yield. When interest rates rise, the opportunity cost of holding gold increases. That dynamic is currently outweighing the safe-haven bid, which is why an Iranian missile attack on a US warship sends the yellow metal lower instead of higher.

This matters because it tells you where gold is actually trading right now. It's not trading as a crisis hedge. It's trading as an inflation hedge, and the inflation signal it's responding to is the one embedded in Fed rate expectations. The moment the Fed pivots, or the moment rate expectations shift decisively lower, the safe-haven bid and the inflation bid will both point in the same direction, and the price of gold will move accordingly.

Wall Street's targets haven't moved. UBS is at $6,200. Goldman at $6,000. Wells Fargo at $6,100-6,300. Every one of those targets assumes a Fed that eventually eases. None of them assumes the war ends cleanly. The thesis for gold's next leg higher doesn't require peace. It requires the Fed to blink. And a Fed that's inheriting 3.3% inflation and a new chair with no political capital to burn is a Fed that's closer to blinking than anyone is saying out loud.

Gold going down on war news isn't the trade breaking. It's the trade waiting for the right catalyst. The catalyst is the Fed, not the Strait.

Roundup
What's Brewing

โš–๏ธ The CLARITY Act stablecoin compromise cleared its main hurdle. Senators Tillis and Alsobrooks reached agreement on the stablecoin yield language that had been blocking progress. The Senate Banking Committee markup is now on track. Circle and Coinbase stocks both popped on the news. Senator Moreno's deadline stands: pass it this month or lose the window.

๐Ÿš€ Tom Lee called it "crypto spring." The Fundstrat founder cited CLARITY Act progress as the primary catalyst, alongside $80,000 Bitcoin, the stablecoin market topping $320 billion, and institutional positioning in crypto infrastructure accelerating across every major bank. Bitmine bought $238 million in ETH last week. Strategy now holds 849,225 BTC.

๐Ÿฆ Kevin Warsh officially takes over the Fed this month. His first press conference will be the most-watched Fed event in years. He inherits 3.3% inflation, rates at 3.50-3.75%, a war-stressed economy, and a new chair's instinct to establish credibility quickly. The gold and dollar trade is going to have strong opinions about whatever he says first.

๐Ÿ›ข๏ธ Iran designated parts of Hormuz as under IRGC military control. The IRGC Navy released a formal map after the frigate attack. This is a significant escalation in legal framing, not just tactical action. Iran is asserting jurisdiction over international shipping lanes. That's a different kind of problem than missiles, and it's the kind that doesn't resolve quickly with a ceasefire.

๐Ÿฆ Morgan Stanley's Stablecoin Reserves Portfolio went live. A government money market fund that settles in stablecoins. No press release. No announcement. Just a product. The largest US bank by assets built the infrastructure before the regulatory green light was formally given, because by the time it's given, first-mover advantage is already gone.

๐Ÿ“Š Apple earnings dropped last week. Ternus was on his first call as incoming CEO. Revenue beat estimates. The crypto question got asked. Ternus deflected cleanly without closing the door. The $65 billion cash pile stays in T-bills for now, but the body language from Apple's new leadership on digital assets is more open than Cook's ever was. Watch the next earnings call.

Calendar
On the Radar
This week CLARITY Act Senate Banking Committee vote. The most important piece of crypto legislation in a decade either advances or dies this month. Watch for floor vote timing announcements. When it passes, expect a sharp BTC and ETH rally within hours.
May Warsh's first FOMC press conference. His opening signal on rate direction will move gold, the dollar, and Bitcoin harder than any Fed event since 2022. Every word he chooses will be over-analyzed. Pay attention to what he says about the terminal rate, not the current rate.
Ongoing Hormuz situation after Iran's IRGC declared military jurisdiction over parts of the strait. Trump is escorting US-flagged vessels through. Shipowners are still refusing without security guarantees. This doesn't resolve quietly. Watch oil futures after US market close each day.
May 12 April CPI. The first inflation print that captures a full month of oil above $100, elevated shipping, and airline fuel surcharges. This number will be worse than March's 3.3%. How much worse is the question that determines gold's next move.
