April CPI drops this morning, and economists are bracing for 3.7% headline inflation, which would be the hottest reading since 2024 and would land exactly the way you'd expect when oil spent most of April above $100 a barrel. Every financial outlet is going to lead with that number as soon as it prints.

Here's the thing: that's not the number that moves markets. The number that moves gold, Bitcoin, and rate expectations is buried two lines below the headline , and most people reading the coverage will never get to it.

Good morning. Big inflation day. Here's how to read it.

Market Snapshot
Alternatives Pulse
Asset Price 7-Day
๐Ÿฅ‡ Gold $4,677 โ–ฒ +2.8%
๐Ÿฅˆ Silver $85.00 โ–ฒ +11.1%
โ‚ฟ Bitcoin $80,919 โ–ฒ +0.5%

๐Ÿ›ข๏ธ Oil (WTI) $95.00 โ–ผ -1.9%
๐Ÿ’ต DXY (Dollar) 99.50 โ–ผ -0.2%

Silver is the standout this week, up 11.1% after Monday's surge to $85.50, its highest level in two months. The move is partly safe-haven, partly industrial demand expectations, and partly six consecutive years of supply deficit finally starting to get priced into a market that has been ignoring the fundamentals for months.

Bitcoin is range-bound between $80,000 and $82,000, with four attempts at $82,228 all rejected by the 200-day moving average. The whole market is holding its breath ahead of this morning's CPI print, which is the most important macro data point for crypto and gold in weeks.

Oil pulled back slightly to $95 as Trump's rejection of Iran's latest peace proposal was described as leaving the ceasefire on "massive life support" rather than ending it entirely. The Strait stays blocked but the escalation rhetoric cooled just enough for oil to give back some of last week's gains.

The Big Story

April CPI Drops This Morning. Here's the Number That Actually Matters, and It's Not the Headline.

By The Alternative Insider Research Team

Grocery receipt inflation

Economists are expecting headline April CPI to print at 3.7% year-over-year this morning, up from March's already-hot 3.3%. The month-over-month number is expected at 0.6%, which would be one of the biggest single-month moves in years. Polymarket is giving 100% probability that 2026 inflation stays above 3%, and 94% probability it tops 3.5%. When the number lands at 8:30am ET, every financial outlet from CNBC to Bloomberg will run the headline and call it a disaster.

That's not the number you should be watching.

Headline vs. core , why it matters

The headline CPI number includes food and energy. The April headline is going to look terrible because gasoline costs surged with oil above $100 for most of the month, and that surge flows directly into the headline calculation. The Fed knows this. They've known it since the war started. The number they actually use to set policy is core CPI, which strips out food and energy precisely because those categories are volatile and supply-driven rather than demand-driven.

When March CPI landed at 3.3% headline, core came in at 2.6%, one-tenth of a point below expectations. Bitcoin rallied from $70,500 to above $72,400 within hours. Not because inflation was good, but because the number the Fed actually targets was better than feared. The market looked past the scary headline to the signal underneath, and bought.

The question this morning is not whether April headline CPI is hot. It will be. The question is whether core inflation, the medical costs, the rent, the used car prices, the services categories that reflect real domestic demand, stayed contained. If core prints at or below 2.7%, the market will look through the scary headline number the same way it did in March. Gold and Bitcoin will likely rally into the afternoon. If core comes in hot, say 3.0% or above, the trade changes, because that tells the Fed that inflation is spreading beyond the war-driven energy shock and into the broader economy.

What each scenario means for your portfolio

Core CPI prints... What happens to your assets
At or below 2.7% Market looks through the hot headline. Rate cut expectations stabilize or improve. Gold and Bitcoin rally into the afternoon. The Fed's "transitory oil shock" framing holds. Best case for hard assets this week.
2.8% to 2.9% Mixed signals. Headline bad, core edging higher. Market chops sideways. Bitcoin tests $80,000 support. Gold flat to slightly lower. Rate cut odds fall but don't collapse. Watch for direction over the following 48 hours.
3.0% or above Inflation is no longer just an oil story. The Fed's hand gets forced. Rate hike speculation returns. Bitcoin breaks below $78,600 support. Gold dips short-term on dollar strength. The worst case for this week, but potentially the setup for a significant gold buying opportunity within 2-4 weeks.

The tariff wildcard

There's a second inflation driver that will start showing up in the data this month and accelerate through summer: tariffs. The current effective tariff rate sits near 10.8%, and economists at JPMorgan and Morningstar estimate the full consumer pass-through arrives between April and October, adding roughly 50 basis points to headline CPI by mid-year. That means even if the Iran conflict resolves and oil crashes back to $70, headline inflation may stay above 3% through Q3 simply because tariff costs are working through the supply chain.

This is the scenario where the Fed gets genuinely stuck: oil-driven headline inflation fading, tariff-driven core inflation rising, and a new chair trying to establish credibility without looking like he's either surrendering to inflation or killing growth. It's the hardest monetary policy environment in decades, and physical gold holders are sitting in exactly the right position to benefit from it regardless of how it resolves.

The Bottom Line

When the CPI number prints this morning, skip the headline and find the core reading. That's the number that tells you whether this week is a buying opportunity or a hold. Everything else is noise designed to get you to react before you've read past the first paragraph.

Opinion
The Contrarian

Silver Is Up 11% This Week and Nobody Is Covering It. That's Exactly the Point.

Silver ingots

Silver hit $85.50 on Monday, up over 6% in a single session and at its highest level in two months. Over the past week it's up 11%. It's outperforming gold, outperforming Bitcoin, and doing it quietly enough that it didn't make the front page of a single mainstream financial outlet.

The silence around this move is a feature, not a bug. When something this significant happens with no fanfare, it usually means the move is driven by fundamentals rather than narrative, and the narrative crowd hasn't shown up yet.

The fundamental case for silver is one of the clearest in any asset class right now. The World Silver Survey 2026, published three weeks ago and largely ignored by financial media, confirmed a sixth consecutive annual supply deficit. Since 2021, the cumulative drawdown from above-ground reserves is 762 million troy ounces, roughly a full year of global mining output. The deficit is projected at 46-67 million ounces for 2026, worse than 2025. China classified silver as a strategic material earlier this year and set import records. The solar panel and EV industries, which together consume roughly 60% of industrial silver demand, are not slowing down regardless of what happens in the Middle East. You cannot mine more silver to fix this, because 70-80% of the world's silver comes out of mines that are primarily digging for copper, zinc, and lead, and silver supply responds to copper prices, not silver prices.

The silver-gold ratio has been compressing meaningfully this month. When silver outperforms gold, it tends to be early in a precious metals bull run, not late. The institutional money that moved into gold first eventually rotates into silver as gold becomes expensive relative to historical ratios. At $85 silver and $4,677 gold, the ratio is around 55:1. The historical average is closer to 47:1. If it reverts to that average while gold stays where it is, silver trades above $99.

It's still one of the few assets where the structural story is better than the price action suggests. That combination doesn't stay invisible forever.

Roundup
What's Brewing

๐Ÿ•Š๏ธ Trump called the Iran ceasefire "massive life support." He rejected Tehran's latest peace proposal as "totally unacceptable" after it arrived via Pakistani mediators. Iran's counter-offer included demands for a permanent end to hostilities, sanctions relief, and reparations before any Hormuz reopening. The Strait stays blocked. Oil pulled back slightly on the news as markets interpreted the "life support" language as leaving the door open rather than slamming it.

โš–๏ธ CLARITY Act markup hearing is Thursday. The Senate Banking Committee circulated draft text last week and set Thursday as the markup date. This is the last major legislative hurdle before a full Senate floor vote. If it clears Thursday cleanly, the bill could hit the floor before Memorial Day. A passed CLARITY Act unlocks spot ETFs for at least a dozen commodity-classified tokens beyond BTC and ETH.

๐Ÿ“Š Bitcoin ETF inflows hit $700 million last week. CoinShares reported Bitcoin's year-to-date flows have reached $4.9 billion after the latest weekly haul. Bitcoin briefly touched $82,400 before the 200-day moving average rejected it for the fourth time. A daily close above $82,228 would be the first since October 2025 and signal a genuine trend change rather than a bounce.

๐Ÿฆ Kevin Warsh's first FOMC press conference is this month. He takes the chair in May and immediately faces the hottest inflation environment since 2022, a war-stressed economy, and a market starved for direction. His first few sentences about rate path will move gold and Bitcoin harder than any Fed event in years. Watch the 2pm ET announcement and then the press conference. The press conference is the event.

๐ŸŒ Global gold demand hit a record in Q1 2026. The World Gold Council reported total demand reached 1,230.9 tonnes in Q1, up 2% year-over-year and an all-time high. Bar and coin demand was up 42% year-over-year to 474 tonnes, the second-highest quarterly figure ever, driven by Asian investors. Central bank buying continued, with the base of sovereign buyers broadening further. The Q2 demand report, dropping in August, will be worth watching closely.

๐Ÿ’ป Trump is meeting Xi in China this week. The agenda includes Iran, Taiwan, AI, and nuclear weapons. A US-China agreement on Iran pressure would dramatically change the diplomatic picture for Hormuz and potentially crater oil prices overnight. It's a low-probability event, but the consequence of it happening is large enough to keep it on your radar.

Wed 5/13 April PPI. Producer prices are the leading indicator of future consumer inflation. A hot PPI after a hot CPI tells you the inflation pipeline is still pressurized. A cool PPI gives the Fed cover to stay patient.
Thu 5/14 CLARITY Act markup hearing. The most important crypto legislation in a decade advances or stalls. A clean hearing sets up a floor vote before Memorial Day. Watch Circle and Coinbase stock as leading indicators of market confidence in the outcome.
May Warsh's first FOMC press conference. His opening signal on rate direction will be the most important Fed communication since 2022. Gold, dollar, and Bitcoin will all move hard on whatever he signals first.
