SpaceX quietly disclosed $1.29 billion in Bitcoin holdings in its IPO filing last week. Not a side project, not a subsidiary. Elon Musk's primary company, the one that launches rockets for NASA and runs the world's largest satellite internet constellation, is holding over a billion dollars in Bitcoin on its balance sheet.

Meanwhile the US struck Iranian boats and missile sites overnight in what it called a self-defense operation, and oil barely moved. Six weeks ago that headline would have sent WTI to $120. Today it's at $92.63. That tells you something important about where markets think this conflict is heading.

Good morning. Two genuinely interesting stories this week. Let's get into it.

Gold is flat on the week, holding just above $4,550 as diplomacy headlines compete with rate hike fears for control of the narrative. The softer dollar is helping. A genuine Hormuz reopening would send gold lower in the short term as inflation expectations ease, then higher as the structural deficit case reasserts itself.

Oil is down nearly 5% on the week despite the US striking Iranian boats overnight, which tells you the market is pricing in a deal rather than further escalation. Trump said Iran is "being reasonable" and gave them until early next week for a peace agreement. The futures curve is steep, with December contracts trading well below spot.

Bitcoin is range-bound near $76,500, consolidating after a volatile few weeks. ETF outflows hit $1.25 billion last week, but BNY Mellon just announced Bitcoin and Ethereum custody in Abu Dhabi, and SpaceX disclosed $1.29 billion in BTC holdings. The institutional story keeps building even when the price doesn't.

The Big Story

๐Ÿš€ SpaceX owns $1.29 billion in Bitcoin. The list of companies that don't is getting shorter.

SpaceX rocket launch

SpaceX filed its IPO paperwork last week, and buried in the financial disclosures was a line that stopped a lot of people cold: $1.29 billion in Bitcoin holdings on the company's balance sheet. Not Tesla, which people expected to have crypto exposure. Not a fintech startup or a crypto exchange. SpaceX, the company that builds the rockets, runs Starlink, and holds launch contracts with the US Department of Defense and NASA.

It's the kind of disclosure that makes a certain category of investor feel vindicated and makes a different category of investor suddenly very uncomfortable about their all-cash corporate treasury. At $76,529 per Bitcoin, SpaceX is sitting on roughly 16,800 BTC, a position that puts them among the top ten corporate Bitcoin holders globally, right behind Strategy, Tesla, and a handful of crypto-native companies.

Why this one matters more than it looks

Corporate Bitcoin holdings aren't new. Strategy has been buying since 2020 and now holds over 4% of total supply. Tesla disclosed Bitcoin on its balance sheet in 2021. What makes the SpaceX disclosure different is the context. SpaceX is a government contractor. It holds security clearances. It operates critical national infrastructure in the form of Starlink. Its investors include sovereign wealth funds, pension funds, and some of the most conservative institutional capital in the world. If SpaceX can hold Bitcoin on its balance sheet and still maintain those relationships and contracts, the argument that Bitcoin is incompatible with institutional credibility takes a serious hit.

Compare that to Apple's position. The company holds $65 billion in cash and short-term securities and has zero exposure to Bitcoin. For years, institutional money managers have pointed to the absence of Bitcoin from legitimizing balance sheets as a reason to stay cautious. SpaceX just moved the line on what counts as legitimizing.

The broader institutional picture

SpaceX's disclosure landed in the same week that BNY Mellon, the world's largest custodian bank with $47 trillion in assets under custody, announced it would offer Bitcoin and Ethereum custody services in Abu Dhabi. US spot Bitcoin ETFs now hold over $108 billion in assets. Lawmakers introduced a Strategic Bitcoin Reserve bill that would codify US government Bitcoin holdings as a formal treasury asset. Strategy now holds enough BTC to own more than 4% of total supply.

Each of these individually is a data point. Together they describe a financial system that is integrating Bitcoin at the institutional level faster than most people tracking the daily price action realize. The price is down from its January high. The infrastructure being built around it is at an all-time high. Those two things don't stay disconnected indefinitely.

The IPO angle

SpaceX going public changes the Bitcoin calculus for a specific category of investor who can buy SpaceX but couldn't buy Bitcoin directly. Every institutional fund that buys SpaceX IPO shares is getting indirect Bitcoin exposure on their books whether they intended to or not. That's a new and interesting dynamic that hasn't existed before with any company of this profile.

The Bottom Line

A government contractor with security clearances just disclosed $1.29 billion in Bitcoin. That's a different category of institutional validation than anything that came before it. The price is one story. The list of serious organizations choosing to hold Bitcoin is a different story, and that list got meaningfully longer last week.

The Contrarian

๐Ÿ›ข๏ธ The US struck Iranian boats overnight. Oil went down. Read that again.

US warship

Overnight, US Central Command launched strikes on Iranian boats and missile-launching sites in and around the Strait of Hormuz. Secretary of State Rubio called the Hormuz closure "unlawful and not acceptable to the world." Trump said Iran is "being reasonable" and gave them until early next week to make a deal. Oil is trading at $92.63 this morning, down nearly 5% on the week.

Six weeks ago, a headline about US military strikes inside the Strait of Hormuz would have sent WTI to $115 before the market opened. Today it's at $92. That gap between what the news says and what the price does is the most important signal in energy markets right now, and almost nobody is writing about it.

What the oil market is telling you is that traders believe a deal is coming. The December futures contract for WTI is trading well below spot. The futures curve is in steep backwardation, meaning the market expects oil to be significantly cheaper in six months than it is today. That only makes sense if you believe Hormuz reopens. The market has essentially already priced in a partial resolution, which is why new military action isn't moving the needle the way it used to.

Here's where it gets interesting for alternative assets. If a deal actually happens and Hormuz reopens, oil drops 20-30% in a matter of days. That crash in oil prices takes a big chunk of inflation expectations with it, which gives the Fed political cover to signal a more patient path on rates, which weakens the dollar, which is bullish for gold and Bitcoin simultaneously. The scenario that looks like bad news for oil is actually good news for almost everything else you hold.

The oil price not reacting to military strikes is the market doing your homework for you. It's telling you a resolution is closer than the news cycle suggests. Whether you believe it is a different question, but the price action is worth paying attention to.

Roundup
What's Brewing

๐Ÿฆ BNY Mellon is opening Bitcoin custody in Abu Dhabi. The world's largest custodian bank, with $47 trillion in assets under custody, announced it will offer Bitcoin and Ethereum custody services in the UAE. BNY Mellon already provides crypto custody in the US. Adding Abu Dhabi means every major Gulf sovereign wealth fund now has a regulated custodian to hold digital assets without going through a crypto-native firm. That's a different category of institutional access than existed six months ago.

๐Ÿ›๏ธ Congress introduced a Strategic Bitcoin Reserve bill. Lawmakers pushed legislation that would codify US government Bitcoin holdings as a formal treasury asset, similar to gold reserves. The bill doesn't require new purchases, it formalizes what the government already holds from seized assets. But the signal matters: Bitcoin being discussed as a strategic reserve asset in the same breath as gold is not something that was happening two years ago.

๐Ÿ“‰ SEC delayed its tokenized stock innovation exemption. The agency shelved a framework that would have let crypto firms offer tokenized versions of traditional stocks, citing liquidity fragmentation concerns from traditional exchanges. The delay triggered a sell-off that erased roughly $33.8 billion in Bitcoin's market cap in 24 hours. The irony is that the very institutions pushing back on tokenization are the ones most vulnerable to being disrupted by it.

๐Ÿ‡ฎ๐Ÿ‡ณ India just hiked gold import duties from 6% to 15%. The steepest single increase on record, reversing the 2024 reduction that had reinvigorated Indian physical gold buying. India is the world's second-largest gold consumer. Higher duties will redirect some demand to the grey market and suppress official import numbers, but won't eliminate underlying physical demand. Watch for the World Gold Council's Q2 India data when it lands in August.

๐Ÿ›ข๏ธ The UAE exited OPEC on May 1. The world's seventh-largest oil producer formally left the cartel, removing roughly 3.3 million barrels per day from OPEC's production management framework. Combined with the Hormuz closure and the Iran conflict, the Middle East oil supply picture is more fragmented than at any point since the 1970s. When Hormuz eventually reopens, the supply dynamics will look nothing like they did before the war started.

๐Ÿ“Š US spot Bitcoin ETFs now hold over $108 billion. Total assets under management crossed that threshold last week despite the $1.25 billion in outflows. The AUM figure reflects both price appreciation and cumulative inflows since the January 2024 launch. For context, gold ETFs took roughly five years to reach $100 billion after their launch. Bitcoin ETFs did it in 16 months.

On the Radar
This week Trump's self-imposed Iran deadline falls early next week. He said Iran has until then to make a peace deal. If talks succeed, oil gaps down 20-30% at open. If they fail, oil spikes and gold follows its safe-haven bid. Watch oil futures Sunday night.
Thu 5/28 US Q1 GDP second estimate and initial jobless claims. The first GDP read was negative. The revision either confirms the recession signal or walks it back. Combined with 3.8% CPI, a second negative GDP print is the stagflation confirmation that gold bulls have been waiting for.
Fri 5/29 April PCE deflator. The Fed's preferred inflation measure. If core PCE comes in above 3%, the hike probability jumps and the dollar strengthens. Gold and Bitcoin will react within minutes of the print.
SpaceX IPO No formal date yet but the IPO filing is live. When it prices, every institutional fund that buys in gets indirect Bitcoin exposure. Watch for the roadshow dates as a proxy for when the market will formally process the $1.29 billion BTC disclosure.
