Strategy holds more Bitcoin than any company on earth, roughly $35 billion worth at current prices. As of yesterday, the company itself, MSTR stock, is trading for less than that. The market is pricing Michael Saylor's entire operating business, his preferred share structure, his decade of financial engineering, at a negative value. That's not supposed to happen.

Meanwhile gold just closed out its worst quarter on record. Down over 11% this month, around 14% this quarter. And the World Gold Council's annual central bank survey, published the same week and almost entirely ignored, found that 90% of central banks plan to buy more gold this year.

Good morning. Two genuinely strange disconnects this week. Let's get into them.

Bitcoin tested $59,000 support this week, its lowest level since October 2024 and down nearly 50% from its October 2025 all-time high. ETF outflows have run for six straight weeks, totaling close to $6 billion. The 200-week moving average, which has held as bear market support since 2015, was tagged for the first time this cycle. Historically that level has marked the floor.

Gold closed out its worst quarter on record this week, down roughly 14% over three months. May's hot PCE print and a strengthening dollar are both weighing on the metal. The structural buying case from central banks hasn't moved an inch. More on that below.

Oil continues drifting lower as the Iran ceasefire holds and supply normalizes. The energy-driven inflation scare from earlier this year has almost entirely unwound, which is part of why the Fed has room to consider a hike rather than needing to cut.

Feature
The Big Story

๐Ÿ“‰ Strategy's stock is worth less than the Bitcoin it owns. Here's what the market is actually saying.

By The Alternative Insider Research Team

Scale imbalance

Strategy, formerly MicroStrategy, holds roughly 597,000 Bitcoin worth approximately $35 billion at current prices. As of this week, the company's market capitalization has fallen below that figure. Investors are now paying less for the entire company, software business, preferred share structure, management team, brand, everything, than the Bitcoin sitting on its balance sheet is worth on its own.

This is genuinely unusual. For most of Strategy's run as a Bitcoin proxy, MSTR traded at a meaningful premium to its Bitcoin holdings, sometimes 50% or more. Investors were willing to pay extra for the leverage, the convertible debt structure, and the access to Bitcoin exposure inside a regular brokerage account before spot ETFs existed. That premium has now fully inverted into a discount.

What changed

Three things happened roughly at once. Spot Bitcoin ETFs launched in January 2024 and gave investors a simpler, lower-fee way to get direct Bitcoin exposure, which reduced the unique value of owning MSTR as a workaround. Strategy's preferred stock issuances, the same mechanism that funded the 32-coin sale we covered back in Issue #11, have diluted common shareholders repeatedly to keep buying more Bitcoin, and the market has started punishing that dilution rather than rewarding the accumulation. And Bitcoin itself dropped close to 50% from its October 2025 high, which compresses any premium structure built on top of it.

Strategy's response this week was a $2 billion stock buyback combined with what the company is calling a Digital Credit Capital Framework, a formalized program to monetize portions of its Bitcoin holdings to fund dividends and shore up its capital structure. That's the company explicitly responding to the discount by telling shareholders it intends to defend the stock price, even if that occasionally means touching the Bitcoin position that made the company famous.

What it means if you're not an MSTR shareholder

Here's the part that matters even if you've never owned a share of Strategy. A discount this size is a market signal about sentiment toward leveraged Bitcoin exposure broadly, not just one company's capital structure. When a vehicle that holds an asset trades below the value of the asset itself, it usually means one of two things: either the market believes the underlying asset is about to fall further, or the market has temporarily mispriced the wrapper due to forced selling, structural outflows, or a loss of confidence in management's capital allocation decisions unrelated to the asset itself.

Historically, the second scenario has been the more common one, and it has tended to resolve through either a stock buyback that closes the gap, as Strategy just announced, or a rebound in the underlying asset that drags the discount back toward parity faster than the stock price catches up. Either way, a persistent gap between a holding company and the asset it holds rarely lasts indefinitely in liquid markets. Something usually gives.

The Bottom Line

The market is currently saying the wrapper around 597,000 Bitcoin is worth less than nothing. That's either a five-alarm warning about Bitcoin's future or one of the more interesting structural mispricings of the year. The $2 billion buyback announcement is Strategy's own answer to that question.

Opinion
The Contrarian

๐Ÿฅ‡ Gold just had its worst quarter ever. Central banks are buying more anyway.

Gold bars in vault

Gold is closing out its worst quarter on record. Down more than 11% this month, around 14% this quarter, the steepest quarterly decline in the data going back decades. Every headline this week led with the carnage. Almost none of them mentioned what the World Gold Council found at the same time.

The Council's annual Central Bank Gold Reserves survey, conducted among sovereign reserve managers around the world, found that almost 90% of respondents expect global central bank gold reserves to increase over the next 12 months. Not stay flat. Increase. That's not a casual opinion poll. These are the people who run national reserve portfolios, and 9 out of 10 of them are telling the World Gold Council they plan to keep buying gold through what is, by some measures, the worst quarter the metal has had in modern history.

This is the gap between the paper market and the physical market that gold investors have learned to watch for. The paper market, futures, ETFs, leveraged trading positions, moves on rate expectations, dollar strength, and short-term sentiment. It can swing 14% in a quarter because traders are repositioning around a Fed decision. The physical market, central bank vaults, sovereign wealth funds, institutional accumulation programs that take years to execute, moves on entirely different logic: currency diversification, geopolitical hedging, and multi-decade reserve strategy. Those two markets can diverge sharply in the short term and still be telling you the same long-term story.

Global gold bar and coin demand hit 474 tonnes in the first quarter of this year, the second-highest quarterly figure ever recorded and up 42% year over year. That demand came almost entirely from retail and institutional buyers stepping in during price weakness, the exact opposite of what a "shimmer wearing off" narrative would predict. The pattern matches what happened during gold's last major quarterly pullback in early 2025, when physical demand spiked even as paper prices fell, and the metal went on to set new highs within the following two quarters.

None of this means gold can't fall further in the short term. Rate hike fears are real and the dollar's strength is a genuine headwind. But a 90% buy signal from the people who manage trillions in sovereign reserves, delivered during the worst quarter on record, is the kind of data point that tends to look obvious in hindsight and gets ignored at the time because it doesn't fit the day's headline.

Roundup
What's Brewing

๐Ÿ“Š Bitcoin hit its 200-week moving average for the first time this cycle. That level, currently around $62,000, has acted as bear market support every cycle since 2015. Below it sit two on-chain floors analysts are watching closely: realized price near $54,000 and the cost-value-days-destroyed metric near $46,000, which one prominent on-chain analyst calls the highest-probability bottom zone. Supply held at a loss has now crossed above supply held in profit, a condition that has historically marked the lows of every major cycle bottom since 2015.

๐Ÿฆ Charles Schwab's crypto research director said it plainly. Jim Ferraioli told Bloomberg that Bitcoin's current drawdown is unusually orderly by historical standards, with realized volatility roughly half of what it was during the prior two cycle bottoms. His warning to investors waiting for a confirmed catalyst: "If you wait till the CLARITY Act or some other catalyst, you may be too late." The strategic Bitcoin reserve, the CLARITY Act, and expected Fed rate cuts haven't gone anywhere. They're just not priced in yet.

๐Ÿ‹ Bitmine now holds 5.7 million ETH. The Ethereum-focused corporate treasury company reported holdings representing 4.7% of total ETH supply as of June 28, continuing the same accumulation pattern Strategy pioneered for Bitcoin. ETH is down sharply alongside BTC this week, but corporate accumulation at these levels mirrors the exact dynamic we've covered with Strategy. Institutions buying into weakness while retail capitulates.

๐Ÿ›ก๏ธ Congress passed a CBDC ban. Legislation prohibiting the Federal Reserve from issuing a central bank digital currency directly to consumers cleared Congress this week. A separate bill, S.1582, which would affect how banks treat certain deposit categories, remains pending and is a different and unrelated risk that some commentators have conflated with the CBDC issue. Worth understanding the distinction before drawing conclusions about what actually changed.

๐Ÿ”— 50 banks moved FX settlement onto a blockchain via Chainlink. A consortium of major financial institutions began using Chainlink's infrastructure to settle foreign exchange transactions on-chain, the largest institutional blockchain deployment of its kind to date. This is the same quiet institutional infrastructure trend we covered with a16z's tokenization report in Issue #11. The headlines focus on price. The plumbing keeps getting built underneath it regardless.

๐Ÿ“ˆ PCE inflation hit a 3-year high of 4.1% in May. The print landed precisely in line with consensus but still pushed markets to price a potential Fed rate hike by October. This is the macro backdrop behind both the gold selloff and the Bitcoin drawdown this quarter. The next PCE release and the July jobs report are the two data points most likely to move the September rate decision calculus.

Calendar
On the Radar
Thu 7/2 Weekly jobless claims. The next data point feeding into the Fed's September decision. A weak labor market print gives Warsh cover to hold rates. A strong one strengthens the September hike case and keeps pressure on gold and Bitcoin.
Jul 4 A widely-discussed potential White House monetary policy announcement is being flagged by multiple financial publishers around Independence Day. Treat with appropriate skepticism until something concrete is confirmed, but worth knowing your readers may be hearing about it elsewhere.
Jul 22 Target date for finalizing the architecture of the US Strategic Bitcoin Reserve, per a recent White House executive order, structured without using taxpayer funds. Worth watching for the specifics on funding mechanism when details emerge.
Ongoing CLARITY Act progress through the House. The Senate version passed earlier this month. When the House clears it and it's signed into law, the ETF pipeline for tokens beyond Bitcoin and Ethereum opens formally.
