June jobs came in at 57,000. The forecast was 110,000. That gap, 53,000 fewer jobs than Wall Street expected, was enough to send September rate hike odds from 66% to 50% in a single trading session, send gold up, send Bitcoin up 7% on the week, and send oil to its lowest level since before the Iran war started.
One number. Every asset in your portfolio moved because of it. Understanding why is more useful than watching the prices.
Good morning. A genuinely interesting week. Let's get into it.

Bitcoin had its best week since March, up 6.4%, driven entirely by macro forces rather than anything crypto-specific. Ethereum outperformed at 12.2% on the week, with Vitalik Buterin's announcement of the protocol's biggest rebuild since the Merge adding a technical catalyst on top of the macro tailwind. The six-week ETF outflow streak ended with net inflows returning Friday.
Gold is up 2.8% on the week, recovering as the weak jobs report reduced rate hike expectations and softened the dollar. JPMorgan capped their Q3 gold target at $4,300 and Q4 at $4,500 in a Friday note, which is notably more conservative than the $6,000+ targets from earlier this year. The structural buying case from central banks remains intact.
Oil is at $69, its lowest level since before the Iran war began in late February. OPEC+ agreed to raise output quotas for August, Hormuz traffic is recovering, and the two-year inflation breakeven has now slipped back below 2% for the first time since before the conflict. The energy-driven inflation scare of the past four months has almost entirely unwound in the price.

๐ June jobs came in at 57,000. Here's why that number moved every asset you own.
By The Alternative Insider Research Team
The June nonfarm payrolls report dropped Thursday morning at 57,000 jobs created, the weakest print in four months and roughly half of what economists were expecting. The previous two months were revised lower simultaneously. The unemployment rate ticked up. Wage growth slowed. By any measure, it was a meaningfully weak jobs report, and markets reacted within minutes: gold up, Bitcoin up sharply, the dollar down, Treasury yields lower, oil prices drifting further toward pre-war levels.
If you're wondering why a weak employment number causes alternative assets to rally, the mechanism is worth understanding because it's going to matter for the rest of 2026.
How jobs data moves gold and Bitcoin
The Federal Reserve's job is to manage two things simultaneously: maximum employment and stable prices. When employment is strong and inflation is high, the Fed has cover to raise interest rates aggressively. Higher rates make the dollar more attractive, reduce the opportunity cost of holding non-yielding assets like gold, and generally pull capital out of risk assets including crypto. That's the environment we've been living in for most of 2026.
When employment weakens, the calculus flips. A Fed that was already debating whether to hike rates now has to weigh that hike against the risk of tipping a slowing economy into recession. The 57,000 print didn't eliminate the September hike, markets still put the probability at 50%, but it took it from near-certain to genuinely uncertain. That shift from 66% to 50% probability is what moved markets, not the jobs number itself.
Gold specifically benefits because it has no yield, the opportunity cost of holding it depends entirely on what interest rates are doing. When rate hike odds fall, gold becomes more attractive relative to interest-bearing dollar assets. Bitcoin benefits for a different but related reason: it trades as a risk asset in the short term but as an inflation hedge in the medium term, and a weaker jobs market that makes the Fed more dovish is good for both the risk-on trade and the dollar-debasement trade simultaneously.
What comes next
Wednesday's FOMC minutes from the June meeting are the next catalyst. Markets will be reading every word for clues on how close Warsh and the committee actually were to hiking in June, and whether the weak jobs data changes the math for September. A dovish reading of the minutes could extend this week's rally in gold and Bitcoin. A hawkish reading reverses it.
The broader picture is that the macro environment has changed more in the past two weeks than it did in the two months before that. Oil is at pre-war levels. Inflation expectations have normalized. The jobs market is softening. Three months ago the conversation was about how the Fed would manage a war-driven inflation shock. The conversation now is about whether they've overtightened into a slowing economy. Those are very different conversations, and alternative assets tend to perform well in the second one.
|
The Bottom Line
One jobs number moved gold, Bitcoin, oil, and the dollar simultaneously because all of them are ultimately priced relative to what the Fed is going to do next. The 57,000 print didn't end the rate hike debate. It turned it into an actual debate. That's enough to change the direction of every asset in your portfolio for at least the next month.

โฟ Bitcoin's best week since March had nothing to do with crypto.
Bitcoin was up nearly 7% last week, its best weekly performance since March. There was no major crypto news. No ETF announcement. No regulatory development. No Saylor filing. The CLARITY Act didn't pass. Nothing changed inside the Bitcoin ecosystem that would explain a 7% move in a single week.
What moved Bitcoin was the two-year inflation breakeven rate dropping below 2% for the first time since before the Iran war started. The inflation breakeven is a bond market measure that compares regular Treasury yields to inflation-protected ones, and it tells you what the bond market thinks inflation will average over the next two years. When it drops below 2%, the bond market is saying it expects the Fed to hit its inflation target. That's not a crypto story. That's a macro story about the normalization of an inflation shock that's been running for four months.
Oil prices told the same story. WTI at $69 is back to levels last seen before the conflict began in late February. The energy-driven inflation shock that pushed CPI from 2.7% to 3.8% and nearly forced the Fed into a rate hike cycle has almost entirely unwound in the underlying commodity. What was the most significant inflationary shock of the year four months ago is now, from an oil price standpoint, as if it never happened.
This matters for Bitcoin specifically because the most powerful headwind it faced this year wasn't regulatory uncertainty or Saylor selling 32 coins or ETF outflows. It was rate hike expectations. Every week the market added probability to a September Fed hike, Bitcoin faced selling pressure from investors rotating into interest-bearing dollar assets. Now that those expectations are softening, 50% odds is a very different environment than 66%, the weight that's been sitting on the price for months is lifting.
The CLARITY Act, the Strategic Bitcoin Reserve, Schwab's 35 million accounts going live with direct Bitcoin access, none of those catalysts have gone anywhere. They're just not priced in yet. The macro headwind that was suppressing them is starting to ease. That's a different conversation than the one we were having three weeks ago.

๐ง Vitalik announced Ethereum's biggest rebuild since the Merge. A revised roadmap published last week details a multiyear overhaul that would replace nearly every major component of the Ethereum protocol, with quantum resistance and privacy upgrades moving to the top of the priority list. ETH was up 12.2% on the week, the best performer on this list, with the technical announcement adding momentum on top of the macro tailwind from falling rate hike expectations. The rebuild timeline is measured in years, not months, but the direction is clear.

๐ฆ FOMC minutes drop Wednesday. The June meeting minutes will be the first detailed record of how Warsh and the committee framed the rate decision internally. Markets will be looking for any language suggesting the committee was close to hiking in June, which would indicate a lower bar for a September move. A dovish reading extends this week's gold and Bitcoin rally. Watch gold and the dollar in the hour after the 2pm ET release.

๐ข๏ธ OPEC+ raised output quotas for August. The cartel agreed to increase production at its July meeting, adding further supply pressure on top of recovering Hormuz traffic and the US granting Iran a 60-day oil sales license. WTI at $69 is now below the pre-war baseline. The inflation tailwind from energy that dominated the first half of 2026 is gone. The remaining inflation problem, if there is one, is structural and domestic rather than energy-driven.

๐ Bitcoin ETF inflows returned after six weeks of outflows. Last week's net inflows ended the longest outflow streak of 2026. BlackRock's IBIT led the return with $58 million in net positive flows on Friday alone. The ETF market is a useful sentiment indicator, when institutional allocators who can exit anytime start coming back in, it tends to signal that the fear-driven selling has run its course.

๐๏ธ Strategic Bitcoin Reserve architecture due July 22. A White House executive order tasked the Treasury with finalizing the design of the US Strategic Bitcoin Reserve without using taxpayer funds by July 22. The mechanism, likely involving seized Bitcoin assets or a sovereign wealth fund structure, hasn't been confirmed. When the specifics land, it will be the most significant US government Bitcoin news since the ETF approval. Watch for leaks in the week before the deadline.

๐ NATO Summit this week. Leaders are meeting with Ukraine, AI governance, and defense spending on the agenda. Gold tends to get a quiet safe-haven bid during NATO meetings when any geopolitical friction surfaces, even minor. Worth knowing the summit is running this week as context for any intraday gold moves that look unexplained by US macro data.

June CPI. The inflation print that will either confirm the normalization story or complicate it. Core CPI below 2.8% would take September hike odds below 40% and give gold and Bitcoin a strong week. Above 3% puts the hike back on the table and reverses this week's gains. |
