Wednesday's CPI came in at 3.4%, the coolest inflation print since before the war. Fed pause odds jumped to 62% on the release. Gold climbed. Bitcoin bounced. For about 48 hours, the soft landing was back on the table.

Then the FOMC minutes landed and showed a Fed that is genuinely split, with some officials modeling rate cuts and others modeling further hikes. September hike odds moved back up to 67%. The ceasefire expires today with Hormuz still closed, talks deadlocked, and Israel and Hezbollah trading fire again after their deadliest weekend since the truce. Jackson Hole is next week.

Good morning. The two stories that matter most this week are pulling in opposite directions.

Gold is essentially flat on the week, caught between two forces running in opposite directions. The cool CPI print pushed it toward $4,400. The hawkish FOMC minutes and ceasefire expiry pulled it back. Bank of America cut their 2026 average gold forecast by 14% to $4,360 on a more hawkish Fed, but kept $5,000 as their target once the tightening cycle ends. The structural case is intact. The near-term path is being decided by Wednesday's FOMC minutes and whatever happens at Hormuz this week.

Bitcoin is the week's outperformer, up 3.1% as the CPI cooldown gave crypto a macro tailwind it hadn't seen in weeks. CryptoQuant flagged a macro bottom forming, though they noted capitulation selling hasn't fully arrived yet. Long-term holder supply remains at all-time highs. Jackson Hole next week is the next catalyst for the rate story.

Oil is down 3.2% on ceasefire optimism from earlier in the week, before Iran's foreign minister renewed demands over the weekend and talks deadlocked. With the ceasefire expiring today and no deal in sight, watch for oil to spike in Monday trading if any military exchange is confirmed.

The Big Story

Inflation cooled. The ceasefire expired. Neither headline tells the whole story.

Empty diplomatic chamber

Wednesday delivered the best inflation print of the year. July CPI came in at 3.4% annually, with prices rising just 0.1% for the month. Core inflation, which strips out food and energy, printed below the consensus estimate. Fed pause odds jumped to 61.9% within minutes of the release. For a brief window, the data pointed cleanly toward a September hold, which would be unambiguously bullish for gold, Bitcoin, and every alternative asset that has spent six months being suppressed by rate hike fears.

Then the FOMC minutes dropped Wednesday afternoon. They told a different story. Fed officials at the July meeting were genuinely split, some modeling scenarios where inflation eases and allows rate cuts, others modeling scenarios where price pressures stay elevated and require additional hikes. Warsh had removed forward guidance for a reason: the committee itself doesn't know which scenario it's in. September hike odds moved back to 67% after the minutes. The 48 hours of CPI optimism gave way to familiar uncertainty.

Why the ceasefire expiry matters more than the CPI

The June ceasefire between the US and Iran reaches its nominal expiry today. Talks are deadlocked. The Strait of Hormuz remains closed. Over the weekend, Israel and Hezbollah traded fire in their deadliest exchange since the truce was signed. Oman-mediated back channels remain open but have produced nothing signed.

The reason this matters more than Wednesday's CPI number is simple: July's cool inflation print reflects May and June prices, from when the ceasefire was holding and oil was trading near $70. The energy component that drove inflation down in July is a backward-looking measure of a world that may no longer exist as of today. If the ceasefire formally collapses and military exchanges resume, oil goes above $85 within days. August CPI, which won't print until mid-September, will look nothing like July's. Warsh will be walking into the September 16 FOMC meeting with the best backward-looking inflation data of the year and the worst forward-looking energy picture since February.

Jackson Hole next week complicates things further. Warsh's speech at the annual Fed symposium in Wyoming is the last major policy signal before September's meeting. Every word will be read against the backdrop of whatever has happened at Hormuz by then. A ceasefire extension gives him cover to signal patience. A formal collapse gives him a political problem: does the Fed hold into a fresh energy inflation shock, or does it hike into a contraction?

The Bottom Line

Wednesday's CPI was genuinely good news. Today's ceasefire expiry is genuinely bad context for it. The data that moved markets in 48 hours of optimism reflects a world that ends today if the ceasefire formally lapses. Watch Hormuz first. Watch Jackson Hole second. September's FOMC is priced at 67% odds of a hike, but both of those events have more to say about where that number ends up than any release between now and then.

Opinion
The Contrarian

The head of the World Gold Council says Bitcoin goes to zero. His organization is building Bitcoin products.

Antique bank vault mechanism

David Tait, the CEO of the World Gold Council, gave an interview at Consensus Miami in which he said Bitcoin is going to zero. He was careful to call it personal instinct rather than a WGC forecast, "just my personal opinion," he said, "just instinct as a trader." The clip went viral on social media last week, reviving the standard gold-versus-Bitcoin debate that never really resolves.

What most of the coverage missed: the World Gold Council is simultaneously building Gold-as-a-Service, a product line specifically designed to bring physical gold into tokenized and crypto-native financial products. The proof of concept is targeted for late 2026. The organization whose CEO just called Bitcoin worthless is actively building infrastructure to put gold on blockchain rails and distribute it through the same crypto ecosystem he said has no future.

This is not a contradiction you can explain away. The WGC doesn't build products for markets it thinks are going to zero. Institutional organizations allocate engineering resources where they see durable demand. The Gold-as-a-Service product exists because the WGC's own analysis shows that crypto-native investors want gold exposure but won't buy it through traditional channels, they want it tokenized, on-chain, and interoperable with the rest of their digital asset portfolio. You don't build that product while believing Bitcoin is worthless. You build it because you think crypto-native demand is real and growing.

Tait's case rests on watching risk assets break together in liquidity shocks, gold holds while Bitcoin sells. That's an accurate observation about short-term correlation during acute stress events. It's not a thesis about Bitcoin's long-term survival. The assets your readers hold: physical gold, Bitcoin, tokenized gold, silver, are increasingly part of the same ecosystem regardless of what the CEO of any one institution thinks about any individual component of it.

The real story in Tait's interview isn't the zero call. It's that the head of the most established gold institution in the world just gave an interview at a crypto conference, and his organization is shipping a crypto product by the end of the year. The old-money camp is not standing outside the digital asset ecosystem and predicting its demise. It's building a booth inside it.

Roundup
What's Brewing

๐Ÿ”๏ธ Jackson Hole symposium runs Thursday through Saturday. Warsh's keynote is the most anticipated Fed speech since Powell's 2022 pivot signal. With a split FOMC, a ceasefire expiry today, and September's meeting six weeks out, every adjective in his prepared remarks will move markets. The dollar and gold react first, within minutes of the speech. Bitcoin follows. A dovish signal at Jackson Hole would be the single most bullish event for alternative assets since the January ETF approval.

๐Ÿ“Š CryptoQuant: Bitcoin forming a macro bottom, capitulation incomplete. The on-chain analytics firm said Bitcoin is showing the early structural characteristics of every prior cycle bottom, but that the final capitulation leg, the panic selling that sealed lows in 2018, 2020, and 2022, has not arrived. Long-term holder supply at all-time highs means the coins that remain in circulation are increasingly held by people who won't sell them cheaply. The implication: if a capitulation event does come, it may be shallower than prior cycles simply because the supply available to sell is structurally smaller.

๐Ÿ‡ฎ๐Ÿ‡ฑ Israel and Hezbollah had their deadliest exchange since the ceasefire last weekend. The northern front, which has been a secondary concern while Hormuz dominated headlines, reasserted itself over the weekend with casualty counts on both sides exceeding any single-day total since early spring. The Iran conflict is not contained to one theater. Multiple simultaneous escalations create a geopolitical risk premium that is harder to price out than a single bilateral conflict.

๐Ÿ›๏ธ Clarity Act awaiting House vote and presidential signature. The Senate passed it. The House vote is expected this week. Once Trump signs it, the ETF pipeline for Solana, Avalanche, Cardano, and Chainlink opens formally. Coinbase stock hit a multi-year high on the Senate passage. The crypto regulatory infrastructure that has been building for months is one House vote away from being law.

๐Ÿ’ต Bank of America cut their 2026 gold forecast by 14% but kept $5,000 as the target. The revision to $4,360 as the 2026 average reflects a more hawkish Fed baseline. The $5,000 target for once the tightening cycle ends is unchanged. BofA's logic is the same logic that has kept every major institutional gold target intact through this correction: the structural case for gold doesn't depend on what the Fed does in September. It depends on what happens to the dollar over the next decade. That story hasn't changed.

๐Ÿ“ˆ Gold gained 0.5% in July, its first monthly gain since February. The streak of monthly losses, driven by rate hike fears and the Iran-driven inflation shock, ended in July as the jobs contraction and cool CPI shifted the macro narrative. One month does not reverse a six-month trend. But it ends it, and the conditions that produced the losses, rising rate hike expectations, a strengthening dollar, and energy-driven inflation, are all moving in a more favorable direction as of this week.

Calendar
On the Radar
Today US-Iran ceasefire nominal expiry. Talks are deadlocked. Hormuz is closed. No extension has been announced. Watch for any official statement from Washington or Tehran before US markets open. An unannounced military exchange would send oil above $85 within the trading session.
Thu-Sat Jackson Hole Fed symposium. Warsh's keynote is the most important Fed communication before September 16. The speech sets the tone for whether September is a hold or a hike. Gold and dollar react within minutes of the text release. This is the week's defining event for alternative assets.
This week Clarity Act House vote expected. One vote away from becoming law. When Trump signs it, ETF applications for Solana, Avalanche, Cardano, and Chainlink open formally. The biggest regulatory green light in US crypto history since the Bitcoin ETF approval.
Sep 16 FOMC September decision. Currently at 67% hike odds. Jackson Hole this week and the ceasefire situation today are the two biggest inputs before then. A dovish Warsh speech plus a ceasefire extension gets September back below 50%. A hawkish speech plus military escalation locks in the hike.
