How it works

The calculator scales an amount by the Consumer Price Index for All Urban Consumers (CPI-U), the index the Bureau of Labor Statistics uses for its headline inflation rate. It divides the CPI of the year you compare to by the CPI of the starting year and multiplies the amount by that ratio.

Years use the annual average index. "September 2026" uses the latest monthly index (336.94), not seasonally adjusted. The series starts in 1913, the first year the index was published.

The CPI tracks the prices households pay for a fixed basket of goods and services. It does not track asset prices such as homes bought as investments, stocks or gold.
