How it works

The official figure is total public debt outstanding from the Treasury's Debt to the Penny dataset. It counts every Treasury security outstanding, including those held by federal trust funds. The latest total is for 26 October 2026.

The running estimate starts from that total and adds the past 12 months' average pace. The debt rose from $38.01 trillion on 24 October 2025 to $40.53 trillion on 26 October 2026, which works out at $79,452 a second. The real debt moves in steps around auctions, tax dates and redemptions, and it can fall for days at a time. Each new official total resets the estimate.

Net interest is the budget measure from the Monthly Treasury Statement: interest on Treasury debt, less the interest credited to federal trust funds and other interest the government earns. Debt to GDP divides total debt at the end of the latest quarter by that quarter's GDP at an annual rate, from BEA. The per-person and per-household figures divide the latest official total by the Census Bureau's population estimate and its count of households.
