How it works

Inflation here is the percent change in the Consumer Price Index for All Urban Consumers (CPI-U), all items, US city average, not seasonally adjusted. It is the series behind the headline rate the Bureau of Labor Statistics reports each month.

Annual average compares the average index for a year with the average for the year before. December to December compares December with the December a year earlier, so it measures the rise during the calendar year. The two can differ widely: in 1920 the annual average rose 15.6% while December to December the rise was 2.6%.

The latest rate compares September 2026 with September 2025. Decade figures are compound averages a year: the 1970s figure runs from the 1969 average to the 1979 average. Years use the annual averages BLS publishes. 2026 has no annual figure until December 2026 is published.

BLS published no index for October 2025 because of the 2025 lapse in appropriations. The chart and tables leave that month blank rather than estimate it, and BLS calculated the 2025 annual average from the other 11 months.

BLS published the index to one decimal place before 2007, so rates for earlier years are rounded more coarsely.
