How it works

Each figure divides a dollar price by the price of one troy ounce of gold. For past years both are annual averages: the World Bank's average gold price for the year, set against the average of the Dow's daily closes, the average of the four quarterly medians for new houses, the average of twelve monthly WTI crude prices, or the Census Bureau's median household income for that year.

The latest figure divides the most recent published price by the COMEX gold futures price of 27 Oct 2026. Household income is published once a year, so its latest figure is 2025 income at that gold price.

The series start in 1971. On 15 August that year the United States stopped exchanging dollars for gold with foreign governments. Gold averaged $40.80 an ounce that year and $4,074.60 on 27 Oct 2026, 99.9 times as much. Anything whose dollar price rose by less now costs fewer ounces.

The house figure is the median price of new houses sold, from the Census Bureau and HUD, and does not cover existing homes. Oil before 1982 is the posted price for WTI; later figures are spot prices. The Dow history comes from MeasuringWorth and matches S&P Dow Jones Indices on all but 2 of 2,505 trading days since 27 Oct 2016.

On annual averages the cheapest year was 1980, at 106.5 ounces, and the most expensive 2001, at 638.8. In 1971 the median new house cost 618.3 ounces.

How many barrels of oil does an ounce of gold buy?

What is median household income in ounces of gold?

Median household income was $87,460 in 2025, or 25.4 ounces at that year's average gold price of $3,441.51, and 21.5 ounces at $4,074.60 on 27 Oct 2026. In 1971 the median, $9,028, came to 221.3 ounces.

Why measure prices in gold?

A dollar price moves when the thing itself changes and when the dollar does. Measuring in gold takes the dollar out of the comparison. From 1971 to 2025, the median new house rose 16.5 times in dollars and the Dow 50.1 times, while gold rose 84.4 times, on annual averages. Gold has its own swings, so a single year in ounces says as much about gold as about the thing measured.
